DeviantArt Questionnaire

How long have you been on DeviantArt?

I've been a member for 11 years (wow, crazy) but have been browsing probably a few years longer. I only got brave enough to open an account and upload my own art after high school.

What does your username mean?

I tried for petral but it was taken. So petralfire is an amalgamation of a character I created in a comic book back in high school named petral and the element of fire. I am fuzzy on the details from 10 years ago, but the comic was a collaboration between friends to make a manga/American style comic blend that involved royalty, anarchy, magic, romance, betrayal, friendship, transfiguration, life, the universe, and everything. Sort of a Soul Caliber meets Ladyhawke (seriously, what a great movie) meets Merlin meets Harry Potter meets Criminal Minds. So it was all the things teenage me was into; and let's be honest, adult me is still basically into most of the time. Funny enough petral was supposed to refer to the seabird the character could transfigure into, but I realize all these years later that it's spelled wrong, it should be petrel for the bird, or petrol for gasoline, but petral isn't a thing at all...

Describe yourself in three words.

A staff artist!

Are you left or right handed?

Right handed most of the time.

What was your first deviation?

Prepare yourself for some badly scanned images...

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Although my profile might not show much of it currently, photography, and comics/manga are the only two art forms I would consider myself good at. I tend to feel good about the final results, so it tends to be my favorite type of art to create.

If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

Watercolor, without a doubt. Actual or digital both look amazing. Such a difficult art form to do well.

What was your first favorite?

I should've known it was going to be a Final Fantasy VII deviation. I still love it!

What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

Anything that catches my eye. And a lot of it does...
I'm a huge fan of line art without coloring. The black and white contrast just makes the art pop to me. Something about it speaks to my inner child and makes me want to print them out and get out my colored pencils too:

Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

This probably differs by the day for me. Currently, I would have to say Picolo-kun, not only because of the amazing deviations he puts out with a consistently high quality, but also because of his motivating others to create art every day.

If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

Hard question. I would be thrilled to meet any of my fellow staff or artists that I follow, although I'm pretty introverted and awkward in person, so they likely wouldn't be too thrilled to meet me!

How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

All the artists whose art I have enjoyed have impacted my life in some way or another. Some subtly and others profoundly.

What are your preferred tools to create art?

Sketchbook (bristol if I can find/afford it), any pencils (with good non-smudgey erasers), any good quality non-ballpoint pen. Gimp afterwards.

What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

It really depends on my mood. For me it's my head space that needs to be right most of the time, not the physical space. Having said that, a good cup of coffee or tea, nice breeze, and good music on the record player never seem to hurt.

What is your favorite DeviantArt memory?

The day I learned I would be working at DeviantArt. I thought back to teenage me when I was first on DeviantArt, toiling away over sketchbooks getting better at drawing, writing short stories and trying to come up with characters and plots, studying physics and calculus and trying to come up with practical applications, wondering where Nasa and space exploration would go in my lifetime, practicing music on a bunch of instruments, and enjoying all of these things but basically feeling spread too thin looking for what my future might be. I think that if that younger version of me knew she would be working at DeviantArt as a grown up, she'd feel a little less lost and be very proud of her (future) self.

Sorry all for the dimensions and/or resolutions on my pictures, my editing program won't let me veiw it as I should.  I shall fix soon!  Promise!
